DELHI: Faced with a challan of around Rs 11,000 for drunk driving and other offences, a man set his motorbike on fire even as cops were in the process of impounding it near Sheikh Sarai in south Delhi on Thursday evening. The man said he had bought the bike for Rs 15,000.
Police said the man was issued a court challan that would make him liable to a fine of Rs 10,000 for drunk driving and Rs 1,000 for riding without a helmet.
Police said the offender pulled out the fuel pipe of the Bajaj Pulsar and set the bike ablaze with a lighter.
Fined biker had seven times the permissible blood alcohol level
Additional DCP (south) Parvinder Singh said that the incident happened near the Triveni Complex in Chirag Dilli. When the local police reached the scene it was found that the traffic staff was carrying out a drive against drunk driving. The offender, Rakesh, was found to have an alcohol content of 200mg/100ml against the permissible limit of 30mg/100ml.
When asked to produce the bike’s papers, Rakesh refused to show these to the cops. He kept asking them how much challan he would need to pay in court. When the cops mentioned that he could be booked for a minimum of Rs 11,000, he told them to impound his bike. Police officers say he was told about the changes in the law after which he got agitated.
When the cops asked him to leave the keys and step aside, he sneaked behind the vehicle and pulled out the fuel pipe and set it on fire. The bike went up in flames immediately, and the man managed to flee. He told onlookers that he had set his bike on fire to prevent it from getting impounded.
A fire team was called in by the cops and the flames were doused. Cops later caught Rakesh. He would be charged under sections of mischief by explosive substances.
During interrogation, he claimed that he had liqour with his friends and was returning home on his bike.
